Apple Computer Performance: MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel C2D 15 Inch Versus Power Mac 2.0 GHz Dual G5 - Performance, Reviews - Information

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

The Question:

I currently have a PowerMac Dual 2.0GHz PowerPC G5, I'm interested in buying a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I have 2 GB DDR SDRAM, and the MacBook has 2 GB SO-DIMMs.

I do graphic design, Photoshop, video editing, Maya 3-D and stuff like that. I'm interested in knowing how much faster the laptop will be and if I can use it as my new main work machine.

Thank you!
Colby

The Answer ...

Colby,

We were only able to generate a truncated performance comparison due to the time difference between when these two machines were tested. We did not have the enough confidence in the results to publish them. However the Graphs below provide a loose comparison between our current control machine, the iMac 1.8GHz Intel Core Duo, and the MacBook Pro profiled directly below.

One thing to note is that laptop hard drives are generally slower than their desktop counterparts, and laptops also do not allow the extent of upgrade possibilities, that Tower machines provide. You might want to request a comparison between the current low-end Mac Pro and the MacBook Pro 2.4GHz, which would be an easy comparison for us to make and would give you an idea of how the current crop of Tower machines would stack up to the laptop option.

We regret that we were not able to give you a more well rounded view of the MBP's performance but hope that some of the data supplied here will give you some guidance. If you have follow-up questions don't hesitate to get back to us

Regards,
The Comparison Crew
