Below we provide performance information on the 800 MHz, 1 GHz and 1.25 GHz G4 upgrades from Sonnet, PowerLogix and GigaDesign. We also supply processor performance info on most of the machines that these upgrades can be installed into. Some of the results are based on estimates from what we know of relative performances. So the results below should be considered 'in the ballpark' rather than spot on. We have tried to err on the side of caution, when we had to make estimates ... so if you're surprised by the performance of your upgrade, after having used these results as a basis to make a purchase, you will be pleasantly so.
The processor test below is based on a QuickTime encode, but should be thought of as applicable to any processor intensive application. Processor upgrades mainly effect the calculating ability of your Mac. In some cases they will also give a modest performance boost to graphics performance, and to a lesser extent, drive performance. But mainly they give the machine a greater ability to crunch through data a lot faster. Hungry applications will soak up that extra capability, and overall your machine will feel much more responsive after a processor upgrade.
We have reviewed all the processor upgrades listed below over at MacReviewZone. The review is in three parts. If you are interested in learning more about these upgrades you can find the review at the following links:
Since we reviewed these upgrades, Sonnet, PowerLogix and GigaDesign have all come out with 1.42 GHz versions of these cards. PowerLogix has been shipping a dual processor upgrade for the machines listed below, for some time now. We hope to be able to review the 1.42 GHz cards and PowerLogix's dual processor cards in short order and will be adding that information here.
