Request a Comparison between any two Macs
Computer Trade In Program

Steve,

Hi, you did not submit a normal comparison request (between two machines), so I will try to give you an idea of the relative performance to some of your questions below.

An Intel Core Duo iMac 2.0GHz will run Photoshop ...

Photoshop Filters (Dual Processor Savvy)
Compared to Intel Core Duo iMac 1.83GHz: 9% faster
Compared to Power Mac Quad Core G5/2.5GHz: 82% slower
Compared to Power Mac Dual G5/2.0GHz 68% slower
Compared to iMac G5/2.1GHz: 48% slower
Compared to Power Mac Dual G4/450MHz: 56% faster (In the range of)

Photoshop Filters
Compared to Intel Core Duo iMac 1.83GHz: 8% faster
Compared to Power Mac Quad Core G5/2.5GHz: 63% slower
Compared to Power Mac Dual G5/2.0GHz 48% slower
Compared to iMac G5/2.1GHz: 49% slower
Compared to Power Mac Dual G4/450MHz: 58% faster (In the range of)

Photoshop Workflow
Compared to Intel Core Duo iMac 1.83GHz: 11% faster
Compared to Power Mac Quad Core G5/2.5GHz: 68% slower
Compared to Power Mac Dual G5/2.0GHz 54% slower
Compared to iMac G5/2.1GHz: 44% slower
Compared to Power Mac Dual G4/450MHz: 70% faster (In the range of)

An Intel Core Duo iMac 2.0GHz will run a QuickTime Saturation Encode (Intel Savvy) ...
Compared to Intel Core Duo iMac 1.83GHz: 6% faster
Compared to Power Mac Quad Core G5/2.5GHz: 51% slower
Compared to Power Mac Dual G5/2.0GHz 6% slower
Compared to iMac G5/2.1GHz: 128% faster
Compared to Power Mac Dual G4/450MHz: 198% faster (In the range of)

Because of the time that has passed since the 450GHz Power Mac was released, the scores for it are estimates based on previous data. The current version of Photoshop, as you noted, is not retooled for the Intel chip yet. So for the tests above, Photoshop was running on top of Rosetta. QuickTime is Intel savvy (please note that with our current test we are not able to completely max out the processors of the Quad Core Power Mac).

If you have follow-up or further questions about the data above shoot us another message.

I like the speed comparisons that you have provided so far. It gives one a chart to use in deciding as to whether to buy G5 or to go to Intel Duo Core.

You did touch on something that I was thinking about at the beginning of reading your article.

Comparison of various non-native applications running under Rosetta on Intel Duo Core machines against same application running on various G4 and G5 machines.

What this test will show is real world performance of non-native applications on a Duo Core Mac. As you know, there are many applications, such as Photoshop, that will not be Universal Binary for another year.

For a person, who may want to upgrade from a G3, G4, or Dual G4, knowing the real world performance may be critical to determine if a person is going to buy a new or used G5, Dual G5, or a Duo Core.

Chances are that a person may want to continue using their library of G5 software on the Intel Duo Core with Rosetta.

A good summary to this test.

Running Photoshop 7.0, CS, or CS2 on a Duo Core iMac 2.0Ghz with Rosetta may be equivalent to running the application on a Dual G4 800mhz. Again, I don't know, but these type of performance indicators would be nice to know about.

Just to let you know, I am typing on a Dual G4 450mhz with 1.5GB of Ram. I am not sure if running Photoshop CS2 on an iMac 2.0Ghz Duo Core with Rosetta is twice as fast or the same speed.

I also use Photoshop CS2, Final Cut Pro 4.0, iDVD 06, LiveType 4.0, and iTunes 6.0

I am thinking of getting a Duo Core, but I am also thinking of getting a Dual G5 or a Dual Core G5, which would probably be faster at running pre-Universal Binary versions of software that I currently use.

If running them on a Duo Core with Rosetta is faster than my Dual G4 450, then it would be worth going to the Duo Core because it would be faster than my Dual 450.

Thanks in advance.

Steve
