Look Familiar? MacSpeedZone's "Summer 2001" iMac Information Page

7-18-01
Depending on your proximity to Steve Jobs' Reality distortion field, Apple introduced one or three new iMacs at Macworld New York. The latest iMac roundup consists of a G3/500, G3/600 and G3/700. Technically, only the G3/700 is new, but one could argue that each of the previous machines (G3/400, G3/500 & G3/600) got a 100 MHz speed bump. We'll let the pundits decide...The entry level G3/500 iMac is now priced at $999, the G3/600 at $1,299 and G3/700 at $1,499 respectively. The high end iMac retains the same price tag as the previous high end machine, while the low and mid range iMacs have each been bumped up $100 over their predecessors.

Configuration Tweaks - The new iMacs sport no radical new design or features this time around. This is also the first time in several revisions where Apple didn't introduce any new color schemes. Dalmatian and flower power have both been retired with the tried and true Indigo, Snow and Graphite the remaining color options. Other than the 100 MHz speed bump and color shuffle, the remaining changes boil down to hard drive space, RAM, optical drives and graphics. The changes are outlined below.

  • Hard Drive - The previous generation sported, from low to high, 10GB, 20GB & 30GB hard drives. This space has been doubled to 20GB, 40GB & 60GB.
  • RAM - Of the previous generation iMacs, only one met the minimum RAM requirements for running OS X, a situation that became particularly vexing once Apple started pre installing OS X on all its machines. Now the low end G3/500 is equipped with 128MB and the other two with 256MB, bringing all three into OS X readiness. RAM is dirt cheap these days, so if you get the low end machine you might want to bump it up a little. OS X seems happier with ample room to operate.
  • Optical Drives - All three iMacs have CD-RW drives now. Previously, the low-end iMac had a CD-ROM drive. Rated at 8x4x24, these drive are no speed demons by today's standards, especially when compared to the new G4/733 Power Mac which uses a 12x10x32 drive.
  • Graphics - Apple has standardized on the ATI RAGE 128 Ultra with 16 MB SDRAM for all three iMacs. The previous low end machine had an ATI RAGE 128 Pro with 8MB SDRAM.

That's the new iMacs in a nutshell. Below, we outline the major differences in the iMac lineup and compare it to the previous generation.
