MacSpeedZone's October, 2001 iBook Information Page

10-23-01
On Tuesday, October 16th, with little or no fanfare, Apple rolled out its updated iBook line. The new iBooks share a lot in common with their immediate predecessors which is not surprising when you consider how well the iBook has been selling. We may not see any significant changes until the Macworld expo in Tokyo.

The new:
Apple continues to offer four configurations, ranging in price from $1,299 for the CD-ROM iBook to a reduced $1,699 for the "combination drive" iBook. The low end CD-ROM iBook remains largely unchanged. It still sports a G3/500 processor and 66MHz system bus. Apple has increased the on board RAM from 64MB to 128MB which is now standard across the entire iBook line. The remaining three iBooks feature G3/600 processors and a 100MHz system bus for improved throughput. All of the processors sport a 256K "on chip" cache running at full processor speed. Hard drive space has been increased to make room for all those "digital lifestyle" files, from 10GB to 15GB. The high end combination drive iBook sports a roomier 20GB drive and a 30GB drive is available through the Apple store as a build to order option.

The not so new: The current iBooks retain their form factor, measuring 11.2" x 9.1" x 1.35" and weighing in at 4.9 lbs. For comparison, the "clamshell" iBooks two generations back measured 13.5" x 11.6" x 1.8" and weighed 6.7 lbs. While the latest PowerBooks sport ATI's Radeon Mobility graphics chip with 16MB DDR RAM and a 4x AGP bus, the iBooks continue to use the RAGE 128 Mobility with 8MB SDRAM. This is probably to help keep the price competitive. Ethernet is still 10/100Base-T as opposed to gigabit which is now standard on the PowerBook line. It is unlikely that the iBook's consumer audience will miss gigabit Ethernet, at least not until it becomes more common. The table below outlines the major differences in the three most recent generations of iBook. We will add reviews, including our own, as they become available.
