Our testing utilizes a suite of real world application tests.
These tests feature a selection of software commonly used
by the Mac community. The test suite was designed to render
an accurate and well rounded picture of a machine's performance.
All of the tests (with the exception of the game tests) were
timed with a stopwatch. The times are then converted to percentages
relative to the Dual
G4/1GHz Power Mac, which is set to 100%. For all scores
higher numbers are better.
The Dual Processor G4/1 GHz Tower is our Rosetta
Stone .. we relate all a computer's test results, to the
scores of our 'stock' machine. All new Macintosh computers
are tested with the operating system they where shipped with.
Our hope is that we will be able to relate older scores to
scores of newer machines, running newer versions of the Mac
OS, by using our translator Mac, the Dual Processor G4/1 GHz,
as a prism. However using this method of translation may not
always give a 100% accurate picture of relative performances.
So it may be better to think of performance scores as a snapshot
in time, with only our Stock machine's software configuration
changing, as software upgrades are incorporated into the new Macintoshes
brought to market. The relationship of new computers
we test, to our stock machine, will always be an up-to-date
one. In other words if the new machines have version x of
iMovie installed, then the stock machine will have that version
installed also. This way a relative comparison can be maintained
with a certain degree of accuracy over time.
