Card Price/Performance Equation
Saturday,
August 4, 2001
XLR8 has,
dropped prices up to $70 across its product line. Now you
can upgrade your 604e based Power Mac to a G4 for $359 or
your native G3 machine for $319. Prices have also dropped
on the dual processor upgrades. However these upgrades are
still quite expensive ranging from just under $900 to just
under $1,00. Be sure to check the following pages for more
information about XLR8 upgrades:
What kind of performance gain are you getting for the money
you'll be shelling out for the various cards?......
Bear in mind that MacBench 4.0 does not use the special AltiVec
instructions of the G4 processor. Nor does it make use of
a second processor in dual processor configurations. So the
scores below will not show the improved performance of the
G4 over the G3 for applications written to take advantage
of the G4 and/or dual processors. In our testing using AltiVec
savvy applications we have seen between 38% to 128% performance
improvement when using a G4 over that of the G3. For more
information see below.
The scores below are relative to the performance of the slowest
machine which receives a score of 100%. Higher scores mean
better performance.
Some of the scores below as based on estimates.....your mileage
may vary.

XLR8 Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
XLR8 now even better value!
meeting growing demand for low cost G3s and fast
G4 processor upgrades.
Atlanta, Georgia. August 1, 2001: XLR8, the leading
manufacturer of Macintosh multiprocessor upgrades and
expansion products reduced pricing on many of its
most popular processor upgrades by up to 16%. The new
lower pricing makes it more affordable to purchase the
highest quality upgrades available for Apple Power Macintosh
systems.
Only XLR8 with it's modular, upgradable and re-configurable
design philosophy, exemplified by the Carrier ZIF MPe
and MACh Velocity, has made the upgrades the products
of choice for buyers wishing to protect their investment
in processors, especially the Motorola G4 processors.
With more and more applications, as well as Mac OS 9
and OS X, becoming optimized for Motorola G4s
every day, the performance gains of upgrading systems
to a single or dual Motorola G4 is huge.
"Our G4 MPe ZIF design allows customers to start
with any speed processor and later upgrade to higher
speed G4 processors. Only with XLR8 do you have the
option to later add a second processor at a much lower
cost for blazing fast performance on multiprocessing
applications and OS X Server, stated Jack Kolk,
VP and General Manager of XLR8. Once again customers
can upgrade to great performance for less than ever
before.
