The Carrier Zif card contains a removable Zif processor
that can be used independently in native G3 machines. So you
could, in theory, remove the G4 MHz Zif processor from an
XLR8 card, pop it into your 233, 266 or 300 MHz G3 machine
(if you have one), and put the Zif processor from your G3
machine onto the Carrier card, and pop that into your pre-G3
Power Mac. Now you have upgraded two Machines for the price
of one.
Below we explore what performance
gain you will see with these cards installed in the machines
they are made for.

What kind of performance gain are
you getting for the money you'll be shelling out for the various
cards?......
Bear in mind that MacBench 4.0 does not use the special AltiVec
instructions of the G4 processor. Nor does it make use of
a second processor in dual processor configurations. So the
scores below will not show the improved performance of the
G4 over the G3 for applications written to take advantage
of the G4 and/or dual processors. In our testing using AltiVec
savvy applications we have seen between 38% to 128% performance
improvement when using a G4 over that of the G3. For more
information see below.
The scores below are relative to the performance of the slowest
machine which receives a score of 100%. Higher scores mean
better performance.
Some of the scores below as based on estimates.....your mileage
may vary.

XLR8 Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The best upgrades now a better value! XLR8 lowers prices by up to $130.00 on popular upgrades
and adds multiprocessing lines.
Atlanta, GA, USA. January 17, 2001: XLR8 the leading manufacturer
of Macintosh upgrade and expansion products today announced
lower pricing across its award winning range of G3 and G4
MPe upgrades.
The new prices available from today allow users to upgrade
their Macintosh today to G3 from $289 (for a 400MHz MACh Speed
G3 ZIF) or take the first step on the road to multiprocessing
from $399 (for a 400Mhz MACh Speed G4 MPe ZIF). For owners
of 7300 9600 class Macs (and Clones) the prices start
at $359 (for a 400MHz MACh Carrier G3) and a single processor
MACh Carrier G4 MPe now starts at $479 (for the 400MHz).
Investing in a G4 ZIF MPe now guarantees you entry into the
multiprocessing arena tomorrow, just add a MACh Velocity Solo
at the speed of your choice. Because of the revolutionary
design of XLR8s upgrades you can mix and match products
to get the best for your needs. No longer must you be
tied to an upgrade that you buy today. Our philosophy is to
make each component of a system re-useable and therefore protect
your investment said Simon Ellson, Managing Director
of XLR8 EMEA operation. First the MACh Carrier
product family and now the MACh Velocity MPe family mean you
have many ways to get the most from your investment. In Europe
the concept of removing the processor from a G3 or B&W
and placing it on a MACh Carrier for re-use in a low end machine
has really taken. XLR8 has long used the slogan 2 upgrades
for the price of one, and this continues to be true, its
an even better value now.
XLR8 has been able to reduce the pricing on our upgrade cards
following the latest volume pricing from our suppliers, largely
due to our increasing worldwide market share. It has always
been XLR8s policy to pass these savings on to our customers
so that our upgrades are always the best value today and in
the future, through our innovative technology.
