Introduced in the Summer of 1997, the StarMax 5000 family of computers were Motorola's follow-on machines to the earlier 3000 series. Bases on the lower-end 603e PowerPC processor, these machines nonetheless received high marks for performance that rivaled some higher-end systems. This was due to to a reworked motherboard with a faster but speed and a better memory controller and the addition of the ATI RageII+ graphics accelerator chip to speed up video and 3-D processing.

The 5000s came in 5 speeds (200, 225, 250, 275 and 300Mhz), were aimed at the small business office, home office and entry level creative content markets, and had a robust feature set to meet these market sector demands.

These features included; 32MB of RAM expandable the 160MB using the 3 DIMM slots, 512K of L2 cache, 2 or 4MB of VRAM, 4.3GB or 2.5GB IDE-ATA hard drive, 16X CD-ROM drive, Internal Zip drive and internal SCSI, all fit inside a minitower form factor. In addition each machine, depending on configuration, has 4 to 5 free drive bays and 3 to 5 free PCI slots giving you ample possibilities for expansion. Like the other StarMax models these machines have 2 PS/2 ports and a SVGA type monitor port on the back of the computer.

The lower speed machines came with either a 56K external modem or PCI based 10BaseT Ethernet. The 300Mhz machine had a 8MB IMXMicro TwinTurbo 128 graphics card + PCI based 10/100BaseT Ethernet as a model option.

One quirk of these machines is that one of the DIMM slots can only handle single sided DIMMs

The StarMax 5000s shipped with a unprecedented 5 year warranty.
