The Performance Edge: PowerBook vs PowerBook - Mano A Mano - Apple's G4 PowerBooks Benchmarked
Tuesday, May 22, 2001
Below we present benchmarks for Apple current G4 PowerBooks. We hope to have more benchmark comparisons and a full review of both PowerBooks for you by the end of the week or early next week. In the results below, for processor intensive activity the 500 MHz PowerBook showed between 16 to 30 percent better performance over the 400 MHz model. There wasn't a lot of difference in hard drive or graphics performance, though the Quake III "Fastest" mode test and CineBench 2000 graphics test, did show the extra muscle of the 500 MHz G4 chip.
"Real World" Tests
The tests below are from our suite of real world application tests. These tests feature a diverse selection of applications commonly used by the Mac community. The test suite was designed to render an accurate and well rounded picture of a machine's performance. All of the tests below (with the exception of the Quake III & Cinebench 2000 tests) were timed with a stopwatch. The times are then converted to percentages relative to the G4/400 PowerBook which is set to 100%. For all scores, higher numbers are better. Absolute scores for most tests can be found below this section.
